THE WARNING – Mexican Sisters (interview)

Rarely does a band manage to make such a striking impact on the rock scene at such a young age as The Warning. The Mexican sisters have shown that raw talent and relentless dedication can achieve remarkable heights. The trio first gained attention with multi-million-view Youtube covers and has since shared stages with legends such as Guns N’ Roses, Muse, and Foo Fighters. Already boasting four albums despite their youth, they’ve spent the past decade honing their craft, earning their place as one of rock’s most promising acts. At the Rock for People festival in the Czech Republic, we had the chance to sit down with Daniela, the charismatic lead singer and guitarist, as well as Alejandra, the impressively confident bassist, discussing topics that reveal not only their musical journey but also a more personal side of them.

For those just discovering The Warning through this interview—how would you describe your band and your music in your own words?

Daniela: „Well, the first thing people should know about us is that we’re three sisters from Monterrey, Mexico, so we naturally speak both Spanish and English, and we love rock music. We like to describe the kind of music we make as powerful and energetic. If you come to one of our live shows, you’ll definitely be told to jump around, clap, and scream. We love having fun on stage, that’s for sure.”

You started out as sisters jamming in your bedroom. Did you ever imagine that one day you’d be touring the world with this kind of momentum?

Daniela: „Oh, not at all. It all started with a dream when we were very, very little. We’ve actually been playing together for almost 11 or 12 years now. We were just kids back then, so now being able to tour the world with our music is totally a dream come true. We’re very happy.”

How did you come up with the idea of forming a band? Were your parents supportive?

Daniela: „It all came about very naturally. We each played our own instrument, just doing our own thing, but the day we decided to play together, everything changed. It felt amazing—we were just so connected to each other. And yes, our parents supported us from day one. They always encouraged us to follow our dreams, but also to dedicate ourselves to them. They were like, “If you want to tour the world, you have to practice! That’s how it’s done.” So, they’ve always been our number one supporters. Most people assume they’re musicians too, but actually, they’re not. They just really love music, so there was always something playing in our house, but we’re the first musicians in the family.”

You’ve come a long way from viral covers to big international stages. What do you think has been the turning point in your journey so far?

Daniela: „There have been quite a few turning points. When we first went viral doing covers on YouTube—especially our Enter Sandman cover—it got us a lot of attention. When we started making our own music, the people who discovered us through those covers stuck with us and supported that journey. We just grew little by little from there.”

Alejandra: „I think the real shift came when we began writing our own songs. That’s when everything started to take off and then it went global when Muse invited us to open for them in Europe. Now we’re touring everywhere. It’s been amazing.”

How does the dynamic work in the band as sisters—do you ever fight over creative decisions, or has it actually become a superpower? Have you ever worried about falling out like some siblings in the music industry?

Daniela: „Of course we have discussions, especially about creative decisions. But being sisters actually makes it so much better—we can be 100% real with each other. That honesty helps a lot.”

Alejandra: „Totally. This is all we’ve ever known; we’ve never been in a band with anyone else, so it’s natural for us. Honestly, I wouldn’t change it for anything. I think it works perfectly—we make it work.”

Daniela: „And no, we’re not worried about falling out. We get along really well, and we know how important communication is. If we’re struggling—emotionally, or with something on tour, or if we’re homesick—we talk about it. We’re always checking in with each other, and that keeps things healthy.”

You’re breaking boundaries as a sister trio in a scene still dominated by guys. What’s something about being women in rock that surprises people the most—either on or off stage—that you wish more fans really understood?

Daniela: „You know, I’d like to know too! (laughs) People always talk about the stereotype, but we didn’t think twice about being girls in rock. Since we started as kids, we just assumed it was totally normal to be women on stage—because we were women on stage, doing our thing.”

Alejandra: „Until people pointed it out, we never thought it was weird. We always had each other, and we also looked up to bands like No Doubt, Paramore, Halestorm—so we always had female musicians to inspire us. We didn’t even think about it until we started playing festivals and people began asking, “Is it weird to be women in rock?” Honestly, we’re so happy that more and more women are getting these opportunities—not just on stage, but in the crews, in the media, behind the scenes. There’s just a lot more women around now, and we’re glad it’s changing. Hopefully one day, it won’t be something people point out anymore because it’ll just be normal.”

Daniela: „If we can help move things in that direction, we’re honored. We’re just happy to be part of the change.”

Your latest album Keep Me Fed shows a lot of growth. What themes or stories were most important for you to express this time around?

Daniela: „Keep Me Fed had a very specific process. We wrote it in between tours, in the middle of really chaotic schedules; just short amounts of time in the studio, then back on the road, so, a lot of different emotions came out. But what’s always most important to us is to write from the heart, to be authentic and honest. This was the first album where we allowed ourselves to be a bit more vulnerable, to write from a more personal perspective. We started writing music when we were kids, and now we’ve been through all these tours and experiences that we wanted to express. We can’t wait to see what the next album brings out of us.”

Who are the artists or bands that truly shaped your sound, and are there any unexpected influences fans might be surprised by?

Daniela: „We pride ourselves on listening to a lot of different types of music, and I think that’s why our songs blend so many different elements. We definitely like to experiment with our own sound. Before this latest album, we were listening to a lot of Royal Blood and Muse, especially since we toured with them, so they definitely influenced us.”

Alejandra: „Paulina, our drummer, listens to a lot of classical music. There was also a time when we listened to a lot of K-pop—we still do! And of course, tons of rock, like AC/DC, Queen, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses. Everything we’ve listened to, from when we were young until now, influenced our music. We take a bit of everything and mix it into our own sound.”

With four albums out and so much touring under your belt, do you prefer being in the studio or on the road?

Daniela: „Honestly, it depends. I love both.”

Alejandra: „Same. They’re both really special in their own way. In the studio, we go deep into writing, recording, and producing—it’s very creative. But on tour, we get to spend time with our team, sometimes even explore new places and do touristy stuff. They each have their own magic.”

Daniela: „And being on stage is such an energy booster. It makes everything we do feel fresh.”

On a lighter note, what’s something fans would be shocked to know about you?

Daniela: „Oh god, I don’t know! Maybe the fact that we’re actually a super chill band. A lot of people tell us, “You’re so different off stage.” On stage we look kind of crazy, but off stage, we’re pretty relaxed.” (laughs)

Looking ahead, what are your plans for the rest of the year?

Daniela: „Right now, we’re touring Europe, doing a festival run, and then we head to the U.S. for our headlining tour, which we’re really excited about. After that, we’ll be heading back into the studio—we’ve already set aside creative time to focus on what’s next for the band. We don’t have an exact release date yet, but hopefully the new album will come out next year. That’s the goal. For now, we’re just taking our time to create it and make it the best it can be. We can’t wait to figure out what’s going to come out of our hearts.”

Last but not least, can we expect The Warning to play in Hungary anytime soon?

Alejandra: „Oh my god, we would love to play there! We haven’t been there yet, but it’s definitely on our list. Hopefully we’ll talk to our agents and make that happen!”
